DWP-related deaths [2010 onwards]

Here are just some of the people who died in DWP-related circumstances since the Tories took office in 2010*.  Some Tories refer to these deaths as mere statistics.  They are real people, not numbers. Their names and circumstances of their death should never be forgotten or covered up as one Tory suggested.  If I died in a DWP related death I’d want people to see me on this list too.  It highlights the wrongdoing which comes from both the DWP and from the top with policy.  So far those responsible have got away scot free with these deaths. We don’t think that is right and demand justice.

Multiple coroners have ruled Tory DWP policies to be a key cause of death of their clients.

It came to light no company is brought in to quality assure DWP procedures. Esther McVey claimed that DWP procedures were quality assured but this is only something approved bodies can do such as Price Waterhouse Coopers.

DWP says they do not have a legal ‘duty of care’ to sick and disabled people.  We don’t expect the DWP to play nursemaids but they most certainly should be contacting social services and other relevant healthcare workers before severing benefits.

DWP says there is no list of places staff must contact to safeguard claimants before terminating their benefits.  Staff are instead ’empowered’ to please themselves.

After someone suffers a DWP death sometimes the department carries out an Internal Process Review to find out what happened.  Incredibly they have no policy to show the contents of such a review to the family of the deceased.

Not a single cumulative impact assessment on the potential harm caused by repeated work capability assessment on sick and disabled people was carried out between 2015 and July 2021 when we asked for the information.

In September 2019 Frank Field asked how many inquests was it ruled that the policies of DWP were partly responsible for the deceased person’s state of mind. DWP’s response was “Unfortunately, the information requested is not held centrally and is therefore unavailable without incurring a disproportionate cost.”  It is clearly not concerned about such things.  Here is NAO’s report on the matter.

Even ex-Tory voters have come out and admitted they voted Tory UNTIL illness struck them.  Stop trusting the Tories because they really don’t care about you. The next name we add to this list could be yours!

Nick Barker – RIP

Nick Barker

Former sheep farmer Nick Barker had a brain haemorrhage which left him struggling to walk. The father of two shot himself after the DWP claimed he was ‘fit to work’. Recording a suicide verdict, coroner Michael Oakley said the benefits assessment was key to the tragedy.  Did he sound ‘fit to work’ to you?

No-one answered for his death and we believe they should.

Cecilia Burns – RIP

cecilia_burns_rip

Cecilia Burns had cancer.  Atos called her for one of their assessments.  DWP declared her ‘fit-to-work’ so she appealed the decision.  She was so ill that she died shortly after winning her appeal. A process she so obviously shouldn’t have been put through.   Does that sound ‘fit to work’ to you?

No-one answered for her death and we believe they should.

Chris Cann – RIP

Chris Cann

After losing both legs & a finger to diabetes Chris Cann was housebound. Despite this, the DWP insisted he travelled outside and go in for one of their ‘fit to work’ assessments or they would cut off his benefit. The letter shook Chris up badly. Despite the DWP changing their minds about him going in, he died of a suspected heart attack soon after.

David Clapson – RIP

DAVID CLAPSON

Former soldier David Clapson died aged 59 at his home in Hillside from fatal diabetic ketoacidosis, which the NHS calls “a dangerous complication of diabetes caused by a lack of insulin.” He died on July 20th 2013 because he couldn’t keep his insulin cool due to being sanctioned by the DWP.  Claire McGuckin of the DWP said, “I am confident that the correct procedures were followed for the administration of benefit.”  Correct to the point of killing the claimant apparently.

Tim Salter – RIP

Tim Salter

Tim Salter, 53, was partially sighted & suffered from mental health problems. Tim was found hanged at his home just days before he was due to be evicted over rent arrears. Coroner Andrew Haigh concluded: “A major factor in his death was that his state benefits had been greatly reduced leaving him almost destitute and with threatened repossession of his home.”

Mark Scott – RIP

Mark Scott

DWP couldn’t even get Mark Scott’s name correct.  He was 46 when they passed him off as fit to work despite a medical record of severe anxiety, epilepsy, panic attacks.  He died shortly afterwards from pneumonia. But his father’s troubles didn’t end there. To add insult to death, his father who is called Clifford Scott received a letter from the DWP containing major errors and obviously wasn’t checked. The letter stated: “We are sorry to hear about the death of Clifford Scott. We will make a payment of £186.87 into your chosen account for the death of Clifford Scott”!

Mark Wood – RIP

Mark Wood

Mark Wood had obsessive-compulsive disorder, cognitive behavioural problems, phobias of food & social situations and was on the autism spectrum.  DWP ruled him fit for work. Mark then starved to death. DWP claim they obtain evidence from claimants’ GPs. Mark’s GP, however, exposed the truth and revealed the DWP did NOT contact him. He added if they did he would have told them Mark wasn’t fit for work. He was also a constituent of Witney MP David Cameron during the time he was Prime Minister!

The year after winning an appeal he was called back again for another fit to work assessment for which he scored zero points. A week after his benefit payments were stopped he took his own life. His suicide note said he didn’t want to be a burden.

Maxwell Quinton – RIP

Former welder Maxwell Quinton, 54, suffered with sciatica, memory problems, COPD, depression and a blood disorder called haemochromatosis.

After taking a lump sum out of a small private pension, the grandad-of-one was asked to submit bank statements to the DWP.  Then they sent him a letter saying they hadn’t received them so they had suspended his benefit.

That same day he committed suicide

Later his wife found letters he had written including one to her which said to make sure she told the benefits system what they are doing to people like him.

No-one answered for his death and we believe they should.

Please remember these people when it comes to the General Election and dont allow their deaths to be in vain.
Dont fall for the Tory lies & propaganda on how their “Long Term Economic Plan” is working when in actual fact its not.
For 5 years they have hindered growth in the economy with their ideological austerity program and placed the poorest, most vulnerable people such as the sick and disabled, the unemployed, and even the working classes trying to survive on minimum wages & zero hour contracts, into even further penury.
Please vote the Tories out because if you waste your vote, you’ll only condemn us to even worse cuts, 60% more than we’ve had at present, and continued austerity for everyone except the rich. These poor dead souls are only the tip of the iceberg, there are documented numbers of 10,600 people dying within 6 weeks of coming off ESA, between January and November 2012 so is it any wonder the Tory led government & its DWP fuhrer Iain Duncan Smith, stopped recording these numbers and have refused any FOI requests from people and charities investigating these deaths. We wont know the full scale unless we get them out, the truth will be found but only if we get them out this coming May.
Dont let us or your country down, but most of all dont let these poor lost souls down.

  3. They are playing with peoples lives, no matter how many the numbers are that are dying from their errors, it’s just too many.. I may be in Australia.. but I have disabled friends in the UK and would never want any of them to be treated in this way.
