Families who live on top of shale gas deposits could receive a “frackpot” of thousands of pounds under plans by Theresa May to spread the benefits of shale exploration.
The prime minister has intervened to expand a consultation on the “shale wealth fund” to consider direct payments to residents as well as money for community trusts and councils.
Towns and villages are already in line for up to 10% of tax revenues from fracking of shale gas in their area. The fund, announced last year by George Osborne, then chancellor, could pay up to £10m to each region of England.
Theresa May’s plans to compensate those affected by fracking are denounced as a ‘bribe’ by environmentalists.
